The University of East London (UEL) is introducing two new professionally accredited BSc programmes in Counselling and Counselling and Mentoring developed by staff within the Field of Guidance, Counselling & Coaching in the School of Psychology.
Both programmes focus on the skills and personal qualities needed to engage in helping and developing relationships with people in counselling, coaching, mentoring and facilitation. The BSc Counselling is a professional training programme for students who want to practise as counsellors.
As part of both programmes, students will be able to develop knowledge and skills that are relevant and valued by employers in a variety of sectors such as understanding people, active listening, forming and building relationships and effective communications.
Gordon Jinks, Principal Lecturer in Counselling & Psychotherapy at the School of Psychology said: “These two programmes are only recently validated and are unique nationally as they reflect recent changes in counselling as a growing profession. UEL is one of the universities at the forefront of those developments.
“The Government is introducing new statutory regulations for counsellors in 2011 and the Counselling programme has been especially prepared with that in mind. For students on the programme, it will also help with their personal development, skills and research.”
The BSc Counselling and Mentoring programme has a wider spectrum and is intended to equip students with a variety of transferable skills and knowledge useful for careers in youth work, health and social care, education and management.
