Eight teams from London City Airport, Gateway to London, Newham Hospital, Newham NHS, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and the University of East London (UEL), braved the downpours on the evening of Wednesday 29 July, to take part in the inaugural Royal Docks Annual 5-a-side tournament, organised by UEL funding officer Tom Egan.
The UEL Lions and Newham Sports Development Team topped their respective leagues, and went into the semis against the second-placed City Airport and ESDS Eagles. Newham narrowly defeated City Airport in the finals.
Presenting the trophies, Selena Bolingbroke, Director of External and Strategic Development Services at UEL said: "It has been an exciting competition and a brilliant turn-out for what we hope will be the first of many sports events. Congratulations to Newham for winning – it’s interesting to see so many UEL graduates on the team!"
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL said: "This is a great opportunity for UEL to take part in a local sporting tournament and engage with other organisations. We are working with a wide range of partners to create more opportunities for students to participate in other related activities too."
