Thursday 25 June 2009

Taiwo Sodeyi, BSc (Hons) Sports Science graduate competing in the 110m hurdles. The media will be at the heart of the 2012 Games, experiencing first-hand how the Olympics can impact on a major world city like London

UEL is launching an innovative Sports Journalism programme, offering students the practical and academic knowledge to develop as sports reporters and sports industry analysts. The first graduates will complete the degree in June 2012 – just a couple of months ahead of the London Games.

As part of the new degree, students will learn how modern professional sport combines the pursuit of excellence with multibillion dollar business strategies. The programme will be taught by a team of experienced former and current journalists.

“The media will be at the heart of the 2012 Games, experiencing first-hand how the Olympics can impact on a major world city like London, and the course will allow students an exploration of wider cultural and social changes too." explained Maxine Newlands, Programme Leader for Sports Journalism at UEL’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences. “UEL is the only university to offer a degree in sports journalism within the five host boroughs."

UEL is anticipating a high demand for the degree and is offering registration to eligible students on a first-come-first served basis.

UEL’s Docklands campus is just four miles from the Olympic site at Stratford, and even closer to the Olympic venues based at the O2, the ExCel Centre and Greenwich.

For more details or to register an interest please contact the Programme Leader, Maxine Newlands at m.newlands@uel.ac.uk or telephone 0208 223 7825.
