A University of East London (UEL) lecturer is exhibiting her work at the prestigious Florence Nightingale Museum located in the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital in Lambeth Palace Road.
The installation Mapping the Body by Susan Stockwell, a lecturer in Fine Art at UEL is on display throughout the museum. Susan’s work highlights the journey of Florence Nightingale as a widely travelled woman looking to improve nursing, the care of the sick and the status of women.
Susan spoke about the installation yesterday at the museum and she also worked with young women from a school in Croydon during her residency at the museum. The women mapped their personal journeys in life-size drawings and they created the sculpture “Flo” in her shape.
Susan Stockwell said: “My installations are designed to show transformation and Florence Nightingale was an extraordinary woman who transformed the lives of thousands of people around her.”
With provocative works in sculpture, drawing, collage and installation, Susan uses everyday materials to create works of art. She has exhibited her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Museum of China in Beijing and the Neuberger Museum of Art in New York.
The exhibition runs until 7th September 2009. For further information visit www.florence-nightingale.co.uk
