Spanning the globe at Architecture Year End Show

Friday 26 June 2009

“we have always had a strong cohesive group of talented students and we attract a lot of people world-wide.”

Global influences from the remote Isle of Arran in Scotland to the colourful terrains of Istanbul in Turkey are on show in the work of over 400 Architecture students at UEL’s Architecture Year End Show.

The amazing display of work was opened by David Adjaye, award winning architect and UEL Honorary Doctor of Arts on Wednesday June 24.

Projects featured include a host of stunning designs such as the ‘hotel Istanbul’. This project was based on the Bosporus in Turkey and features a wooden ‘hotel’ structure well over 15 ft tall designed by post graduate diploma students in unit 9.

“This School has such a huge diversity and direction and you’re very valuable students to the industry.” David Adjaye said. “Even as the world is collapsing and changing at the moment, so the need to re-invent it is there. It is a future that your generation will make - congratulations with your work.”

Six students received distinctions in undergraduate unit G with their thought provoking work ‘Between City and landscape’ where they designed hostels along a pilgrimage route that led to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. The students walked 150km of the Via de la Plata and worked with constructions of great historical importance in hamlets and villages.

17 design units took part along with students from other courses at the School of Architecture and Visual Arts at the Docklands Campus.

Other themes included ‘Facing East’ which focused on housing environments and the social infrastructure in Tower Hamlets and Istanbul, ‘lume material’ which looked at the city of Venice using cinematography and other projects involved urbanism near the Olympics site.

The show is open to the public until July 15 and features the work of undergraduate and postgraduate Architecture students.

Architecture Year End Show takes place during London’s Architecture Week. This annual event showcases the combined works of each unit within the BSc, Diploma and Masters Programmes.
