Exciting seminar explores culture, economics and identity today

Friday 8 May 2009

The University of East London’s (UEL) Centre for Cultural Studies Research (CCSR) is inviting the public to an innovative free seminar with a global flavour New Research in Cultural Studies on Thursday 28 May at UEL’s Docklands Campus.

The seminar will bring together early career researchers associated with the Centre for Cultural Studies Research and speakers are qualified and current post graduates at UEL including Dr Ben Pitcher, who will be launching his new book ‘The Politics of Multiculturalism.’

Dr Pitcher's research interests include anti-racism and the modern politics of race. He also teaches cultural studies and sociology at a number of different institutions in London.

Highlights of the seminar will include the concerns of multiculturalism under new Labour, the significance of second hand markets in the East End and Reality TV in Asia.

Ashwani Sharma, MA Global Media Programme Leader and Lecturer at UEL said: “This seminar is at the forefront of topical issues and we are expecting an interesting and lively debate and discussion. We will cover local, global and political concerns and there will be something for everyone.

“Cultural studies is an important subject that links into a much wider picture, especially with the emergence of issues that affect people world-wide, such as the recession. The seminar will also highlight the pioneering quality of work produced by UEL postgraduates and give everyone a chance to have their say.”

Other speakers include Sarah Baker on Doing cultural studies: the story of the retro sideboard, Joanne Lim on Performing the nation: The cultural politics of reality TV in postcolonial Malaysia, Karen Cross on Cultural studies and ‘The cult of the amateur’ and
Rebecca Bramall on Articulation and historicity: evaluating the new austerity.

The seminar will be followed by an informal reception and launch for Ben Pitcher's new book and the event will take place at 3pm in the West Building WB.2.01. Please confirm your place by sending an email to Ash Sharma a.sharma@uel.ac.uk.
