New unique distance learning course is the first of its kind in the UK

Thursday 28 May 2009

Dr Sarah Davidson

UEL is launching a pioneering new distance learning Post Graduate Certificate in September 2009 in International Humanitarian Psychosocial Consultation. The course is aimed at graduates working or looking for a career with humanitarian organisations and NGOs in the UK or internationally as many NGOs operate in the UK providing a host of services. The programme also combines best practice and guidance from the humanitarian sector with academic research.

Delivered by specialists in the field, the course brings together international aid agencies and professional bodies with a proven record in delivering humanitarian services. These include the British and International Red Cross, Medical Foundation for the Victims of Torture, Interhealth, the BBC World Service Trust and Save the Children.

Programme leader, Dr Sarah Davidson is also the Deputy Clinical Director at UEL and the psychosocial advisor to the British Red Cross, she was awarded an MBE for her services last year. Sarah said: “This programme is totally unique and offers graduates who are working anywhere in the world a chance to continue working and studying.”

Subjects on the agenda will make students aware of existing social inequalities and how people cope with limited resources. Areas covered include working with people with HIV and AIDS, war and conflict, children and families, race and culture and refuges and asylum seekers.

Work opportunities after successful completion of the programme range from careers in humanitarian aid agencies in the UK or overseas and within public health/social services with a psychosocial focus.
