The University of East London’s BSc (Hons) Acupuncture degree has been awarded accreditation which enables successful graduates to join the British Acupuncture Council. UEL's School of Health and Bioscience also has a growing BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine degree programme accredited by the National Institute of Medicinal Herbalists.

The Centre for Clinical Education in Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Sports Science and Complementary Medicine at UEL's Stratford offers consultations in herbal medicine, acupuncture and Swedish massage at highly subsidised rates. In recognition of the future need for integrated healthcare, the School is developing specialist clinics that encompass a range of therapeutic approaches and the NHS.

Charmian Wylde, BSc Acupuncture Programme Leader at UEL said: “Acupuncture is a challenging and rewarding occupation. As the profession is nearing statutory regulation, this is an ideal time for people to study a really inspiring degree.

Accreditation was awarded by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board. UEL's professional training programme is available on a full or part time basis and is taught by a highly experienced teaching team that includes doctors from China and America, as well as specialist guest speakers.

“The degree is grounded both in western medical science and in the history, philosophy and theory of Chinese medicine. Most acupuncturists go on to set up their own practice, and the programme teaches people the necessary professional skills to achieve their goals.”

Students learn how to treat a wide range of conditions including muscular and skeletal, mental and emotional disorders, digestive, respiratory, and gynaecological. All work is supervised and carried out at UEL’s on-site community acupuncture clinic in Stratford.

In the final year of training, students can follow their topic of interest through their research project, and between years two and three, there is an optional placement in Nanjing China, where students experience working in a busy teaching hospital of Chinese medicine.

UEL's BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine degree prepares students to practice under the standards and codes laid down by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. They study concepts, history and philosophies of herbal medicine and to the current scientific evidence base supporting the safety and effectiveness of herbal medicine treatment.
