UEL Law student aims high

Tuesday 14 April 2009

A University of East London (UEL) Law graduate has set his sights high as he becomes the first UEL student to gain an internship at the International Criminal Court at the Hague in the Netherlands.

Imtiyaz Ali graduated with a LLM International Law and Criminal Justice degree in October last year and will now join the Court Service Division for a sixth month period in April.

Imtiyaz said: “I’m really looking forward to this great opportunity as it will help me fulfil my career aspirations and provide a unique opportunity to gain an insight into how such a prestigious court operates.”

The International Criminal Court was established in 2003 and has jurisdiction over war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. More recently, the court has been in the news as it issued an international arrest warrant for the President of Sudan, Umar Bashir, on indictments of war crimes and crimes against humanity for events in Darfur.

John Strawson, Senior Lecturer in Law at UEL said:

"I am delighted that Imtyiaz has gained an internship at the International Criminal Court. It is a critical time for the court and it will be a fascinating experience for him. I hope that his degree will provide a good foundation for his work and that he will come back to UEL to share his experiences."

The Law School’s research received a major endorsement in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 as 80% of its work was graded at international recognition and above.

Two UEL alumni have been named among the UK’s 100 most powerful lawyers by the Times. Mark Stephens, a successful media lawyer and broadcaster and Imran Khan, lead solicitor in landmark cases including the Stephen Lawrence murder, are both listed in ‘Law 100: the UK’s most powerful lawyers.’

Ends.
