Cass School of Education Building

Following a successful £16.5 million redevelopment at Stratford campus, UEL is set to invest further in new campus facilities in the run-up to 2012.

This month, students and staff moved into the magnificent new Cass School of Education building at Stratford. Work has also been completed on the Conference and Computing Centre, complete with 400-seat lecture theatre, which will open in the summer, a major extension to the Arthur Edwards building, and a new entrance with a landscaped courtyard on The Green.

The £8 million Cass School of Education building, created with grant support from Sir John Cass’s Foundation and designed by award-winning Richard Murphy Architects, is organised around a central atrium with café, information and exhibition area, and theatre, with flexible teaching spaces, offices, consultation rooms, science, music and design suites. The summer also sees the opening of the Conference and Computing Centre with a 400-seat lecture theatre, and a major extension to the Arthur Edwards building, with a landscaped courtyard. Together, these buildings create an impressive new entrance to the campus from Water Lane via The Green.

In March, the Board of Governors approved a budget of £45 million over the next three years for a further phase of developments including a library and performing arts facilities at Stratford, and a purpose-built sports and leisure centre at Docklands, which will provide state-of-the art facilities, as well as a training, hosting and conference venue for the London 2012 and beyond.

As a dynamic modern university, we aim to create the best possible campus facilities for our students”, said acting vice-chancellor, Professor Susan Price. “With these impressive new buildings at Stratford, and our ambitious plans for future development, we are continuing to invest in the future.”

UEL’s facilities are among the most modern of any university in the UK, with over £170 million invested over the past five years. Our libraries are open 24 hours a day during term time and offer state-of-the art IT and multimedia services.
