University of East London (UEL) students were out in force last Friday, as part of FairTrade fortnight which ran from 23 February to 8 March.

Students hosted information stalls and handed out fair trade bananas and chocolates at Docklands and Stratford campuses in an initiative organised by UEL Students' Union and funded by Junction49, a volunteering project for young people.

Jane Skinner, sustainability co-ordinator at UEL, said: “Everyone has heard of Fairtrade and its ethical standards and for our students running the stalls was a great way to reinforce the message and to see how Fair Trade really works in practice.”

UEL is aiming to become a Fair Trade university later this year, and is running fair trade initiatives for World Health Day on April 7 and the popular Mayfest festival on May 6.
