A University of East London (UEL) Lecturer in Journalism is facing the challenge of a lifetime as she gears up to run the Flora London Marathon on 26th April this year. Maxine Newlands, 35 will be donning her sports gear and running 26.2 miles to raise £2000 for British charity H.E.A.R.T UK.
Maxine’s motivation to run the marathon is due to a close family member dying as a result of heart disease. She has since supported numerous heart charities.
Maxine said: "I've never done any long distance running before and the last time I ran was cross country in PE lessons at school and that was a few years ago! When a close family member suddenly passed away, it was a very difficult and confusing time for the family. Now I'm fitting running in around teaching, developing a new sports journalism degree programme and researching.”
Maxine is well known among colleagues for her previous charity drives. She has completed three London to Brighton Bike rides, and is hoping the UEL and local community will support her in this marathon challenge.
As part of Team red laces for H.E.A.R.T UK one of the two official Charities for the Flora London Marathon, Maxine will be running with 400 others to raise £2000. The money will make a huge difference to H.E.AR.T U.K as they can continue with their invaluable work supporting families in similar circumstances. So far, she has £300.
Steve Trevillion, UEL’s Dean of School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies said: “We are very proud of Maxine and fully support her efforts to raise money for HEART by running the London Marathon.”
If you would like to sponsor Maxine visit her online fundraising page on www.justgiving.com/maxinenewlands. Payments can be made by credit or debit card, and the money will go directly to H.E.A.R.T UK. Where supporters are UK taxpayers, the charity will automatically receive 28% extra in Gift Aid, which makes Justgiving the most efficient way of sponsoring Maxine. For a paper form email Maxine with your donation at m.newlands@uel.ac.uk
Prior to the London Marathon, Maxine will also be running in the Newham classic 10k, which is on April 19 and is also to raise money for charity.
