The Olympic Park Under Construction

The University of East London is calling on local residents to come forward and be part of an innovative digital archive called East London Lives, focusing on communities and health in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This unique project, funded by the Joint Information Systems Council (JISC), is one of a range of research, knowledge exchange and consultancy projects UEL is undertaking with key partners around the Games and its legacy. UEL is working with partners including the London Development Agency, British Swimming, British Paralympic Association, English Institute of Sport, leading sports clubs and local authorities to create a successful long-term legacy from the Games.

“This project is the first of its kind by any host city,” says Dr Iain MacRury, Director of the London East Research Institute at UEL. “It’s a unique opportunity for people to tell us how the Games are impacting on their lives from now until 2012.”

"We would also like to hear the experiences of Londoners who witnessed the 1948 London Olympic Games, so that we can use these oral histories as points of comparison with contemporary voices."

UEL is an official Pre-Games Training Camp for London 2012, and are talking to a number of interested Olympic and Paralympic teams about use of our campus facilities in the run up to 2012.

UEL research and development staff are working on a range of research, knowledge exchange and consultancy projects with key agencies to play a part in the Games and its legacy.

UEL is an official pre-games training camp, host to the Proactive East London sport and physical activity partnership, and working with partners including the London Development Agency, British Swimming, British Paralympic Association, English Institute of Sport, leading sports clubs and local authorities to create a successful long-term legacy from the Games.

The archive will go live in September 2009 and it aims to capture the Games’ impacts in these areas. To be a focus group participant or to share your history of the Olympics in London with us, or for further information about East London Lives 2012, contact Dr Mary Smith, Project manager, East London Lives 2012 digital archive www.uel.ac.uk/ell2012/
