New graduates from the University of East London’s (UEL) School of Law and Psychology celebrated their academic success on Wednesday 3 December.
Every graduate was personally congratulated by Lord Rix, Chancellor of UEL as they crossed the stage at the Barbican Hall in the City in front of their proud families and friends. He also presented honorary awards to Denise Jones, Sir John Whitmore, and Brian Baldock.
The School of Psychology at UEL is one of the UK’s leading centres for postgraduate professional psychology training. The School of Law, based at Stratford is a leading centre for human rights education and research.
Professor Susan Price, Vice-Chancellor at UEL said: “I am delighted for everyone graduating here today and we wish you every success in the future.”
Denise Jones is a former mayor and deputy leader of Tower Hamlets council. She runs the Eastside Bookshop in Brick Lane that publishes books about East London. Denise said: "East London is a wonderful place, with people of all backgrounds and nationalities living and working side by side. I can see the whole world is represented in this hall today, and I hope each of you will go out and make the world a better place.”
Sir John Whitmore is author of Coaching for Performance, and has worked with leading multi-national corporations world-wide to establish coaching management cultures and leadership programmes. Accepting his award of Honorary Doctor of Business Administration, Sir John said: "Your generation needs to save the world from the mess the older generation have made of it. It’s vital to find a new way of living and working.”
Brian Baldock CBE has helped improve the quality of life for people with learning disabilities. Recently, he supported the Rix Centre based at UEL. Brian said: "I am proud to be associated with this university, to count your chancellor Lord Rix as a friend and mentor, and to be able to support the Rix Centre at UEL - which is doing such pioneering work for people with learning disabilities."
UEL’s School of Psychology offers specialist programmes in Clinical, Counselling, Educational, Occupational and Positive Psychology. The School of Law offers the first taught MSc in Terrorism Studies in England and is developing legal studies in an international and multicultural context.
