UEL lecture seeks to tackle the stigma of adolescent mental health

Friday 17 October 2008

The UEL free lecture series continues with Professor Stephen Briggs tackling the serious subject of mental health and adolescence on Tuesday 21 October at the Docklands Campus.

In this lecture, Professor Briggs will look at the reasons behind the malaise in adolescent mental health problems as widely reported in the media and policy documents for problem behaviours including violence, substance misuse, self-harm, suicidal behaviour and eating disorders.

Professor Briggs said: “This is a highly relevant lecture as mental health and adolescence is currently a huge issue in this country. This lecture seeks to look at the reasons behind these causes and how we as a society, as well as individual organisations can begin to address them.”

Professor Briggs is Professor and Director of the Centre for Social Work Research in UEL’s School of Social Sciences Media and Cultural Studies and Vice Dean and Consultant Social Worker in the Tavistock Clinic’s Adolescent Department. He has written widely on aspects of infancy, adolescence and mental health. He is also the author of ‘Working with Adolescents and Young Adults: A contemporary psychodynamic approach.’

The lecture will be held at 5pm at the West Building Lecture Theatre, WB.G.02, Docklands Campus, University Way, London E16 2RD. The nearest Transport is DLR: Cyprus station.
