The University of East London’s (UEL) free public lecture series will begin again on Thursday October 9 with Professor Kofi Kufuor’s illuminating insights into the rise of the electricity industry in West Africa.
People, Law and the Lighthouse on the Gold Coast: an Institutionalist Story will take place at Duncan House in Stratford. The lecture will address the growth of the industry in Ghana’s Gold Coast, and how the local community were affected.
Professor Kufuor said: "This lecture will look at the evolution of the electricity industry throughout the Gold Coast and Ghana. It will highlight the gradual nationalization of the industry and how, in recent times, it has started to embrace the private sector and local communities as two key suppliers of electricity".
Professor Kufuor’s research focuses on aspects of the role of the World Trade Organisation, economic integration in the developing world, and globalisation and the law. He has lectured extensively in international and economic law for the last thirteen years.
His PhD thesis explored Africa’s economic integration, based on the European model of the single market, which seeks to remove barriers to trade and the movement of people, goods and provision of services.
Professor Kufuor has worked previously as Adjunct Professor of Global Trade for the University of Tulsa (London programme); Associate Fellow of the International Economics Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, (Chatham House); Visiting Lecturer at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and Visiting Scholar at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law, part of the University of Cambridge.
