UEL graduates launch stress management service at Stratford campus

Tuesday 30 September 2008

University of East London (UEL) students enjoyed free massages during Freshers’ Week as a group of recent graduates got set to launch a new stress management service for students, staff and east London residents.

Itayi Chandigere, Kristine Ulozaite, Beth Sandland, Supinder Chana and Margaret Osbourne graduated earlier this year from the UEL School of Health and Bioscience. Educated in physiotherapy, health science and complimentary therapy, they have now decided to combine their knowledge and skills to provide an affordable massage and rehabilitation service for stressed-out and over-worked individuals.

Their stress management clinic will be launched at the UEL Stratford campus on Monday 13 October. Based in state-of-the-art facilities at the Centre for Clinical Education, the service will be initially available every Monday from 2–7pm. The team eventually hope to increase the days available and open a clinic at the UEL Docklands campus.

Itayi, who has now begun studying on UEL’s MSc in Public Health said: “To start with, the service will largely focus on therapeutic massage for stress management, but future plans are to incorporate other therapies such as physiotherapy, Pilates and sports massage therapy, to provide a holistic rehabilitation and wellness service.

“We’ve already had a lot of interest from UEL staff and students and we’re looking forward to helping to take the stress and strain out of every day life for people from all over east London.”

Monica Kumar was one of dozens of UEL students and staff who benefited from the team’s massages during Freshers’ Week, which took place from September 22–26. The free service was supported by volunteering charity Junction 49.

Monica, who studies on UEL’s Combined Honours degree in Education Studies and Sociology, said: “It was the best message I’ve ever had in my life! My neck and shoulders were feeling pretty tense before, but the masseuse really found the right pressure points. I’d definitely recommend it to others.”

UEL’s Centre for Clinical Education was opened at the Stratford campus earlier this year by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall. The Centre offers state-of-the-art teaching and clinical facilities for Physiotherapy, Complimentary Therapy, Podiatry and Sports Science.

The School of Health and Bioscience at UEL offers a wide range of programmes in professional health services, health services management, biomedical science and applied sports science, and delivers professional development programmes for health workers across the region.
