National survey shows student satisfaction high at UEL

Friday 19 September 2008

Aspiring accountants, anthropologists and electrical engineers are among the most satisfied students at the University of East London (UEL), according to the results of the 2008 National Student Survey (NSS) published this week.

95% of students on UEL’s BSc (Hons) degree in Electrical Engineering expressed overall satisfaction, while Accounting and Finance and Anthropology scored 94% and 93% respectively. Other highly-rated courses include Media, Surveying and Civil Engineering, Sociology, Psychology, Architecture and Law.

Professor Mohammad Dastbaz, Dean of the School of Computing and Technology at UEL, said: “I am delighted to see that so many of our students are clearly enjoying their experience and satisfied by their studies. At UEL, we work hard to create an environment in which students can work hard and achieve their potential – not only on campus, but in the workplace too.

“UEL has a good record on employability - 93% of our students in full-time work or further study within six months of completing their degree, and obviously this is even stronger in vocational courses like engineering, accounting and architecture.”

The NSS is a major annual survey, offering final-year undergraduates across the UK the opportunity to feedback on their academic experience. Students are invited to rate their satisfaction with a range of criteria, including teaching, assessment, personal development, academic support and overall satisfaction.

UEL’s overall student satisfaction score was 3.8 out of 5, exactly the same as the 2007 result. Together with UEL Students’ Union, staff are now working to further improve the student experience and raise standards across the board.

Professor Susan Price, UEL’s acting Vice-Chancellor, said: “We aim to make studying at UEL as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. It’s good to see that so many of our students are satisfied with their courses, but we are determined to continue improving our teaching, student support and campus facilities this year and in future.”
