Selena Bolingbroke, former President of the University of East London (UEL) Students’ Union, has returned to her alma mater to take up a senior post as Director of UEL’s External and Strategic Development Services (ESDS).
Selena has been appointed to replace Carole Snee, who retires this month after seventeen years at UEL. She arrives after spending three years as Director of ‘Shaping Thurrock’, the Local Strategic Partnership, where she led the development of a Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement plans, as well as revitalising the Partnership governance structure and performance management framework.
Selena said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be back at UEL, proud to be serving my own university, and determined to achieve the best for the next generation of UEL students.
“As a former student myself, I am well aware of the strengths of the university and deeply committed to UEL’s vision to develop its success as a modern and inclusive university, actively engaging with students, partners and communities.
“I am also delighted to retain a link with Thurrock through UEL’s involvement in the exciting and ambitious Thurrock Learning Campus, which will offer a far greater range of further and higher education opportunities to local residents.”
Selena’s connections with UEL date back to 1990, when she began a multi-subject diploma at the former Polytechnic of East London. Between 1992 and 1994, she served as Vice-President and President of the Student Union, before moving on to develop her career in higher education at the universities of Central England and Middlesex.
Selena returned to UEL in 2000 to take up the post of Senior Project Officer in the Vice-Chancellor’s Group. After a year’s secondment to the Thames Gateway Strategic Executive in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, she was promoted to Head of Strategic Planning and Quality Enhancement at UEL in 2003.
Professor Susan Price, UEL’s acting Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to welcome back Selena, who has already contributed significantly to the development of the University of East London. In her new post, she will play an essential role in strengthening our strategic partnerships.”
Carole Snee added: "I am delighted that Selena has been appointed as my replacement. I am confident that she will make a significant contribution to the on-going development of UEL's work in Thames Gateway and continue to develop our leading role in education-led social and economic regeneration of our region."
