UEL celebrates international student success

Monday 14 July 2008

Over a hundred students from all over the globe gathered at the University of East London’s (UEL) Docklands campus on Friday 4 July for the 2008 UEL International Students' Awards Ceremony.

Lord Rix, Chancellor of the University, awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates to graduating students from over 40 countries. Many were accompanied by their friends and families and, in some cases, their children.

Addressing the assembled graduates and their families, Lord Rix said: “Our university is a truly global community, and very proud that London’s rich multicultural mix is well reflected in our student population.

“Each of you has contributed in your own significant way to the vibrancy and growing success of UEL. I trust you have all enjoyed your time here, and that you leave us today with an enthusiasm for new ideas and equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed in your chosen careers.”

Awards for outstanding achievement were presented to Syed Ali and Kashif Bashir, of Pakistan, Pegah Hajipour, of Iran, Kelia Hess, of America, Caroline Hlahla, of Zimbabwe, John Ogazuma, of Nigeria, and Farhan Syed, Deepak Ramanujam and Rajanmol Singh Turna, of India.

Distinguished quests included representatives from Bangladesh, Brunei, Ghana, Malaysia, Nigeria, India and Sri Lanka, who joined academics and International Office staff at the ceremony.

The awards ceremony was followed by traditional afternoon tea at the Aqua East Students Union cafe, with musical accompaniment from the Parendah String Quartet.
