Dr Mohammad Dastbaz appointed Dean of UEL School of Computing and Technology

Leading multimedia and e-learning expert Dr Mohammad Dastbaz has joined the University of East London (UEL) as Dean of the School of Computing and Technology.

Dr Dastbaz, who took up his post last week, is a leading researcher in security systems, multimedia and e-learning. He joins UEL from the University of Greenwich, where he was Head of Information Systems and Multimedia and successfully led a major redevelopment plan promoting research, developing links with industry and greatly expanding the range of programmes available within his department. He also established the multimedia and e-learning research group 'e-centre', and worked with the BBC to create a unique BA (Hons) degree in Film and TV.

Dr Dastbaz has written on a wide variety of topics, including the design and development of multimedia systems, mobile education, programming the web for interactivity, and personalised e-learning platforms. His current research and teaching interests include eCommerce, Web services, ICT sustainability and strategic IT.

Dr Dastbaz said: "The University of East London is a really vibrant and expansive learning community and I am very ambitious about what we can achieve in the future. The School of Computing and Technology has many great strengths and excellent links with industry, locally and globally, and the challenge now is to capitalise on the huge opportunities ahead."

Based at the Docklands Campus, UEL’s School of Computing and Technology incorporates computing, business information systems, civil and electrical engineering, product design, GIS and land surveying. The School has Cisco Networking Academy status and an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offering placements within industry.

Internationally recognised areas of research include satellite guidance systems, manufactured aggregates and pipeline technology. The School’s civil engineering programmes are highly rated and UEL’s Geo-information Research Centre and Sustainability Research Institute provide consultancy services worldwide.

Professor Susan Price, acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London, said: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Dastbaz as Dean of our School of Computing and Technology. He has the background, dynamism and experience to lead an exceptional academic team and build upon our growing reputation for teaching, research and knowledge exchange in this vital area.” 

Dr Dastbaz has also worked at the universities of Kingston and South Bank, and served as Director of Finance at Omid Housing Association, which provides accommodation for homeless refugees and people on low income.
