UEL students give their best shot at charity table tennis tournament

Friday 13 June 2008

A group of University of East London (UEL) students have raised over £200 for charity – all off their own bat – after holding a marathon table tennis tournament at the Docklands campus on Tuesday 10 June.

Zoe Holloway and James Murray, who both live on campus at the UEL Student Village, worked with Sky Lafoucade, Race and Welfare Officer at the UEL Student Union, to organise the seven-hour event.

The tournament, held in the sunshine at UEL’s University Square, raised money for the Disasters Emergency Committee in the wake of the recent devastating cyclone in Burma and earthquake in southern China.

Sky said: “It’s been a great day – over forty people came out to take part in the contest and, at one point, we even got the Vice-Chancellor playing! The most important thing is that we were able to raise money and awareness about the terrible impact of the recent disasters.”
