University of East London awarded top marks for 'outstanding' teacher education

Monday 16 June 2008

The University of East London (UEL) has strengthened its reputation as one of the UK's leading centres for teacher training after being awarded top marks from Ofsted for the quality of its postgraduate secondary teacher education.

The Cass School of Education at UEL received a Grade 1 (Outstanding) result for Secondary PGCE Training and for Management and Quality Assurance. The report highlighted UEL’s key strengths as inspirational leadership, innovative practice, commitment to inclusion, and close attention to trainees’ individual needs.

The report, to be published on the Ofsted web site on Thursday 19 June, states: “The quality of training (at UEL) is outstanding. The programme is very well designed to help trainees achieve the new standards and become enthusiastic, committed teachers.

“The PGCE course is inspirationally led and managed…The quality of mentoring is very high… Trainees come from a wide variety of backgrounds and the university is painstaking in the way it takes account of their individual needs.”

Ann Slater, Dean of the Cass School of Education, said: “This is a wonderful result that confirms our reputation for excellence in preparing teachers to educate young people in a wide range of learning environments.

“As well as secondary teacher training, we offer highly successful primary and post-compulsory programmes. Our teacher trainees enjoy hands-on, mutually beneficial work placements in schools throughout east London and Essex. With excellent financial bursaries available, now's a great time to come to UEL and train to be a teacher.”

UEL works in partnership with over 70 secondary schools and offers postgraduate teacher training in Design & Technology (Food/Textiles), ICT, English, Modern Languages (French, German, Spanish, Bengali), Mathematics, Music, PE, RE and Science. A range of innovative booster and subject enhancement courses are also available.

UEL was recently awarded a £1 million grant by Sir John Cass's Foundation to develop a major new centre for Education teaching and research. The Cass School of Education is now under construction at the UEL Stratford campus, and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The University of East London is one of London's leading centres for teacher training, offering highly successful programmes for Primary, Secondary and Post-Compulsory levels. For further information, call 020 8223 2152.
