Professor Steve Trevillion, a leading expert in social work and community care, has been appointed Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of East London (UEL).
Professor Trevillion is a social work theorist who is best known for his development of new models of partnership, collaboration and networking. In recent years, Professor Trevillion has also been working on issues including the meaning of ‘prevention’, the nature of social work research and ways of teaching research skills to social workers. He is currently looking at how social work practice influences social work research.
Professor Trevillion joins UEL from the University of Leicester where, as Professor of Social Work and Director of the School of Social Work, he coordinated the social work submission for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, expanded PhD provision and launched a new distance learning programme in professional leadership and management.
Professor Trevillion was previously Head of Social Work Education at the General Social Care Council where he took the lead role in developing the post-qualifying framework of social work education for England. He is the author of three books and many other publications. His teaching interests include the history of social work, community care policy and practice, social work methods, the study of social care organisations and inter-professional working. He studied anthropology at University College, London University and the University of Oxford, and social policy and social work at the universities of York and Exeter, taking his PhD at Brunel University.
Professor Trevillion takes up his new post on Monday 19 May. He said: “Joining UEL will be a kind of homecoming, as my father was born and grew up in Poplar. UEL is ideally placed to contribute to the success of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Cultural Olympiad and the numerous regeneration projects that are changing the face of this part of London - it is hard to think of anywhere more exciting to work!
“It is a great privilege to be appointed to lead a School which contains so many world class researchers and teachers. It has won international renown as an innovative, multi-disciplinary school with a focus on the needs of individuals and communities.”
