A-level students from schools and colleges across the UK and Ireland enjoyed a taste of life at the University of East London (UEL) Stratford campus at an all-day event held on Monday 21 April as part of the London Taster Course Programme 2008.
The students took part in practical classes covering anatomy, physiotherapy clinical skills and podiatry clinical skills at UEL’s School of Health and Bioscience, as well as touring the campus and finding out all about life as a student.
The new Centre for Clinical Education in Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Complementary Medicine and Sports Science at UEL was opened earlier this year by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall. The Centre houses teaching and research in professional health sciences, sports science, and subjects allied to medicine, as well as clinical facilities for podiatry run in partnership with Newham Primary Care Trust.
The event was organised by Gloria Adigwe and Health and Bioscience staff together with UEL’s Education and Community Partnerships team, which organises a busy programme of school visits, master-classes and education fairs, and was recently short-listed in partnership with the London Borough ofWaltham Forest for the prestigious London Education Partnership Awards.
The London Taster Course Programme, administered by the University of London, offers students looking towards attending university in September 2009 the opportunity to experience life as a university student, in the subject area of their choice.
Jacqui Potter, Field Leader in Professional Health Sciences at UEL’s School of Health and Bioscience, said: “The taster day enables students to experience some of the theoretical and practical aspects of physiotherapy and podiatry.”
The University of East London was the first UK institution to launch a physiotherapy degree programme and in 2003 won the NHS training contract to deliver podiatry in London.
UEL’s School of Health and Bioscience is expanding its programmes in professional health sciences, health services management, biomedical science, and applied sports science, as well as delivering professional development programmes for health workers across the region. www.uel.ac.uk/hab
