UEL students snap up top spot at major photography showcase

Friday 14 March 2008

Photography students from the University of East London (UEL) snapped up a top spot at Focus on Imaging, Europe’s largest annual showcase of imaging and photography, held at the NEC in Birmingham from 24-27 February.

Fifteen first and second-year students from UEL’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts exhibited their work at the show. The photographs chosen for display were landscape shots taken during a field-trip to the Brecon Beacons in Wales in August 2007.

Ralph Hall, Programme Leader for UEL’s BA (Hons) degree in Photography, said: “Exhibiting at Focus on Imaging has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to show off their talent, develop their skills in curation, and build valuable contacts with leading photographic manufacturers and companies.

"The Brecon Beacons trip is an annual event, which enables our students to work on their landscape photography. It always produces stunning results, and it's great to see them on show at such a prestigious event."

Master-printer Melvin Cambettie Davies, who lectures part-time at UEL, hand-printed and toned all of the images from the student's original negatives. The UEL exhibition was sponsored by Kentmere Photographic, a subsiduary of Harman Technology.

Photography is one of a wide range of programmes on offer at UEL’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts. The School is among the UK’s leading centres for architecture, is highly rated for research in art and design, and has established a national and international reputation for excellence and creativity.
