A major exhibition of new sculpture by Turner Prize-winning artist and University of East London (UEL) lecturer Grenville Davey is currently on show at Canary Wharf.
‘Little Emperor’ is Grenville’s first solo show in London for more than ten years. The exhibition, housed in the lobby of One Canada Square, features ten original sculptures created at his Essex studio in 2007.
Grenville said: “The idea for this exhibition emerged from a small-scale proposal for installation of etched copper tiles in the lobby. The idea of exhibiting work in such a wonderful space away from the gallery system definitely fuelled my enthusiasm, and I was soon working on a series of engrossing new sculptures.”
On Tuesday 12 February, at 1.15pm, Grenville will join curator Ann Elliott for a free public discussion of the exhibition, which features a diverse range of imagery and concepts. Arts Council England funded the project after Grenville received an Arts Council Established Artists Award in 2007.
Grenville said: “The works came to life together, in the studio, over quite a considerable time, so associations naturally developed between them. The title ‘Little Emperor’ refers to the fact that each work, as it was made, was given the intensity of care and attention shown by fond parents and grandparents towards an only child.”
