UEL awarded EU funding for new research into conflict resolution

Monday 25 February 2008

A major new research project involving the University of East London’s (UEL) Centre on Human Rights in Conflict (CHRC) has been awarded 1,300,000 Euros by the European Union to investigate major contemporary dilemmas in addressing justice and peace.

‘Building a just and durable peace by piece’ is a three-year project coordinated by the University of Lund (Sweden) and involving six other research universities or institutes: Bath, St Andrews and UEL in the UK, Uppsala in Sweden, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Jordan Institute of Diplomacy.

The project aims to investigate current strategies for peace-building and conflict resoultion, with a particular regional focus on the Western Balkans and the Middle East.

Professor Chandra Lekha Sriram, Director of the CHRC, said: “We are very excited to be involved in this major policy-oriented research project. The CHRC has the lead role in the Policies and Strategies element, which will develop relevant policy and academic papers, including guidance for assessing peace-building and transitional justice strategies.”

The CHRC is an interdisciplinary organisation promoting policy-relevant research focused on the relationship between human rights and violent conflict. Key research areas include the human rights obligations of business in conflict zones and the development of human rights protections and rule of law in conflict and post-conflict countries.

UEL’s School of Law is committed to presenting law with an emphasis on human rights education and research, as well as developing legal studies in an international and multicultural context. For further information, visit www.uel.ac.uk/law.
