First-class for Business: family celebrates Pamela's success at UEL graduation

Wednesday 5 December 2007

Newham resident Pamela Thompson is celebrating her success in gaining first class honours in her BA (Hons) Business with Human Resources Management degree at the University of East London (UEL).

Pamela, 36, who lives in Baxter Road, Custom House, was joined by her family and friends, including her five-year old daughter Francesca, at the ceremony held at London’s Barbican Hall on Friday 30 November. She was awarded her degree by UEL Chancellor Lord Rix.

Thanks to her degree, she is now working at a recruitment consultancy in the City of London, and has come a long way since joining UEL's 'New Beginnings 2' programme for adult learners four years ago.

Pamela said: "I had been out of education for 12 years since my A' levels, and I wanted to get into a proper career. New Beginnings was a big boost to my confidence and skills and I was delighted to be accepted on to the degree programme at UEL.

"I really enjoyed studying and we were lucky to have some great teachers. Another fantastic facility at UEL is the nursery - they looked after Francesca really well, and I couldn't have managed without it. Now I'm looking forward to developing my career and at some point, I hope to go back to do postgraduate study."

Graham Symon, Senior Lecturer in Business at UEL, and Pamela's research supervisor, said: "Pamela was an outstanding student and her dissertation, based on real workplace issues, was particularly impressive. It is always a pleasure to teach students of this calibre."

UEL’s Business School, located on the waterfront of the Royal Albert Dock, was opened earlier this year by her majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
