Children at the University of East London’s (UEL) Children’s Garden Early Years Centre have been learning to live off the land, after finally harvesting the wheat that they planted in spring.
Children’s Garden will be holding an open day on Saturday November 17, from 10am–12pm, and a special Christmas Fair on Thursday 29 November from 12–3pm.
Katie Sharrock, Children’s Garden Manager, said: “Harvest time has been a lot of fun - the children really love working in the garden and digging up all the things that they've grown. After hand-grinding the wheat, they even baked their very own harvest loaf, which was deliciously fresh!
“Our Steiner Waldorf educational principles are based on the idea of developing the whole child – the heart, the head and the hands. We believe that young children learn primarily through doing, experiencing and imitating, and our activities reflect that approach.”
Children’s Garden, housed in a purpose-built home by the side of the Royal Albert Dock, provides children aged between three and six with a safe, positive and stimulating environment in which to play, learn and explore. The Centre also now offers a parent and child drop-in group every Wednesday from 10am–12pm for children aged 0-3.
