All welcome to Open House at UEL Docklands campus – 15-16 September

Wednesday 5 September 2007

The University of East London (UEL) Docklands campus will open its doors to all comers on the weekend of 15-16 September as part of Open House London - 'Architecture in the Flesh', a celebration of London’s finest architecture organised by charity Open House.

Between 10am and 4pm, local residents and architecture enthusiasts are invited to join guided tours of the campus, which has recently undergone dramatic developments.

In February 2007, Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the new Business School and Knowledge Dock Centre, two large-scale buildings offering a range of exciting facilities, including a 400-seat lecture, flexible teaching space, expert centres and business start-up space.

The Docklands campus now serves over 7,500 students, researchers and entrepreneurs. A new waterfront student village, including five residential blocks with 788 studio rooms, opened in April 2007 on the eastern approach to the campus. Other recent developments include UEL's unique outdoor gym and the Children’s Garden Early Years Centre.

Located on the waterfront of the Royal Albert Dock, it is London's first new university campus to be built in over half a century. Opened by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone on his very first day in office in 2000, the campus won acclaim for its iconic architecture and was short-listed for Building of the Year.

The campus is one of over six hundred London buildings to be opened to the public on the weekend of 15-16 September as part of Open House’s celebration of the capital’s magnificent architecture.
