‘Ancient Dreaming’ and ‘Rumble in the Jumble’ - UEL and St Paul's Artspace team up for Big Draw East

Thursday 13 September 2007

East London residents are dreaming of the past and getting ready to ‘Rumble in the Jumble’!

The University of East London (UEL) School of Architecture and Visual Arts has teamed up with Docklands-based Diversity Art Forum and the St Paul's Artspace Project to run a series of events in Bethnal Green as part of Big Draw East, opened by artist and illustrator Quentin Blake and the guardian cartoonist Posy Simmonds on 30th September.

On Sunday 30 September, the unique ‘Ancient Dreaming’ drawing project and exhibition will be held at St John's Church in Bethnal Green, organised by Diversity Art Forum with UEL students. Ancient Dreaming encourages people to imagine what Bow could and may have looked like during the 18th and 19th Century.

Then on Saturday 6 October 1pm - 3pm, people of all ages will take part in ‘Rumble in the Jumble’ at St.Pauls Artspace, Bethnal Green. Rumble in the Jungle encourages people to use their creative juices to explore different modes of drawing as they move around a jumble sale.

Pauline Desouza, senior lecturer at UEL and director of the Diversity Art Forum, said: "Big Draw East is about getting people of all ages to pick up a pencil and draw! It’s going to be great fun but drawing is also a serious process, because when you draw you really have to concentrate on what you are doing.”

Big Draw East volunteer Shelagh French, a mother of three from Bethnal Green who is studying for her BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at UEL said: “Seeing children drawing is an education and a pleasure; they can escape into their imaginations without inhibitions and are happy there.

“Big Draw East is a fantastic opportunity to encourage all ages and abilities to take part in the enjoyment that can be derived from drawing. It also gives me the chance to be actively involved locally, which is why I jumped at the chance to take part in this year’s event.”

UEL’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts, opened in 2004 by Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry, offers dedicated, purpose-built studios, workshops and exhibition space. For further information, visit www.uel.ac.uk/ava.
