Double success for UEL in National Teaching Fellowship awards

The University of East London (UEL) has achieved a double success at this year's National Teaching Fellowship awards.

UEL lecturers Julie Baldry Currens, and Sharon Brown have both been awarded National Teaching Fellowships by the Higher Education Academy. Julie and Sharon, who were among just 50 award winners chosen from 223 nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England and Northern Ireland, will each receive awards of £10,000 to support learning and teaching activities.

Sharon Brown is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Technology. With a majority of her students entering studies with qualifications other than A-Levels, and a high number coming from overseas, Sharon has addressed these differences through her pioneering use of portfolio-based assessment, and using non-traditional ways to engage students within the Engineering and Surveying subject area.

Julie Baldry Currens is Principal Lecturer in Physiotherapy in UEL's School of Health & Bioscience at Stratford. She pioneered the design and development of an accredited Situated Learning Programme in Physiotherapy, one of the first in the UK. In her role as School Leader in Learning and Teaching Julie has led a number of other initiatives, including the introduction of an activity-based Plagiarism Awareness week across the School and the establishment of a Learning and Teaching Research Group.
