240 pupils from Newham’s biggest primary school visited the University of East London’s (UEL) Docklands Campus on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 June for fun literacy workshops and an early taste of university life.
The Year 3 and 4 pupils, from Essex Primary School in Manor Park, took part in a range of activities, including tours of the campus, vocabulary-building games and workshops with Professor Fluffy, UEL’s colourful and cuddly toy academic.
Professor Fluffy is the focus of an Aimhigher initiative designed to encourage primary school pupils across the UK to consider higher education as a positive life choice open to all.
Maggie McLinden, Head of Education & Community Partnerships at UEL, said: “Working with Essex Primary School has been a really rewarding experience for everyone involved at UEL. Not only have we been able to support the pupils in their current literacy studies, we’ve also been able to introduce them to the idea of higher education and give them an idea of what university life is like.”
Ebenezer Agyepong (9), of Manor Park, said: “Today’s been really enjoyable, especially when we did the art session and when I told everyone about my dream to become a successful businessman. UEL looks fantastic - I really hope I can go to university some day.”
UEL hosts a range of summer schools, master-classes, exhibitions and events with local schools and community groups throughout the year. For details, call 020 8223 2598.
