A University of East London (UEL) student has captured the highs and lows of life as an aspiring artist in East London in her newly-published debut book, Catalogue.
Nadia Hossenbocus (24), of Whitechapel, wrote the book while completing the final year of her BA (Hons) degree in Graphic Arts at UEL’s Docklands Campus.
Focusing on her struggle to make sense of a life dominated by strange artistic impulses and obsessions, Catalogue details Nadia’s personal journey in a humorous, down-to-earth style.
Nadia said: “As an artist, I always felt a strong desire to make things and then destroy them, and to keep a catalogue of those things. The record was often more important than the artworks themselves, so writing a book became an irresistible challenge.
“Catalogue gloriously fetishises nearly every piece I ever made. It’s a tongue-in-cheek art autobiography, featuring cosmic conkers, pleasurepain chairs and naked Italian men serenading me as I stand in my Whitechapel garden, painting a pyramid white.”
