The University of East London (UEL) is celebrating the opening of its Graduate School in style on Tuesday 17 April with the launch of a new book on wartime propaganda by Dr Tim Brooks and a public lecture by Professor Chandra Sriram, Director of UEL’s Centre for Human Rights in Conflict.
The event opens with the UK launch of Dr Brooks' new book, British Propaganda to France, 1940-1944: Machinery, Method and Message. Professor Sriram will then give her inaugural professorial lecture on the theme of globalising justice for mass atrocities.
Professor Sriram will discuss the rapid development of international criminal accountability since the end of the Cold War, looking at conflict areas worldwide. The talk will draw on examples from Sierra Leone, Congo, Uganda and Sudan, where she has recently been researching the peacebuilding process.
UEL’s Centre on Human Rights in Conflict promotes policy-relevant research into human rights and armed conflict, Islamic human rights, and human rights and civil liberties in the war on terror. The Centre was last week awarded £80,000 by the British Academy to develop a major new analysis of the needs of African countries emerging from violent conflict.
All are welcome to attend the lecture in the East Building at UEL’s Docklands campus from 6.30 pm. Admission is free and refreshments provided. For details call 020 8223 2884 or visit www.uel.ac.uk/lectureseries
