The time is now: Health in London report launch – Monday 30 April

Monday 30 April 2007

The London Health Commission (LHC) will publish a key five-year progress review on health inequalities policy and practice in London on Monday 30 April.

The 2007 Health in London report will be launched by Jennette Arnold, Chair of the London Health Commission and Assembley Member for North-East London, before an audience of health policy experts, practitioners and researchers at the Docklands Campus of the University of East London (UEL).

The report, which outlines areas of progress, also highlights the need to tackle persistent health inequalities and to focus efforts on those most in need, particularly, disabled people, black and minority ethnic groups, children and families in poverty and older people. It calls for closer working partnerships between agencies, co-ordinated health promotion interventions and better dissemination of knowledge to ensure focus on what works.

The report includes an independent review of progress over 5 years carried out by a team led by Professor Adrian Renton, Director of the Institute for Human Health and Development at the University of East London

At a pre-launch seminar open to the public, Professor Renton will speak alongside Dr Ian Basnett, Director of Public Health, Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust and Chair of the London Health Commission, Hilary Thompson of the MRC Social and Public Research Unit and Alex Scott Samuel of Liverpool University and Helen Davies of the Greater London Authority.

The panelists will discuss the causes of health inequalities in London, and propose new solutions which will help shape the LHC’s recommendations to the Mayor of London and inform the development and successful evaluation of the Mayor’s Health Inequalities Strategy.

Ends/.
