An exhibition exploring the narratives and identities of women artists goes on show at the University of East London (UEL) on 12 April as part of the British Sociological Association (BSA) annual conference.
Entitled 'Am I that name? Nomadic lines in becoming a woman artist', the exhibition is curated by
Dr Maria Tamboukou, Co-Director of the Centre for Narrative Research in the Social Sciences at UEL as part of an ongoing research project.
Artists taking part include Trinidad Ball, Pauline Crook, Ursula Dutkeiwicz, Solveigh Goett, Mato Ioannidou, Moira McNair, Lorraine Platt, Lynn Pearson, Irene Runayker, Inez Shamray and Gali Weiss.
Dr Tamboukou said: “After working for three years in the archive reading autobiographies, biographies, memoirs and mostly letters of women artists at the turn of the 19th century, I was lucky enough to actually meet and talk to some real and wonderful women artists and have the opportunity to test ideas that emerged from the depths of grey documents to story-lines coming from life history interviews.
“How have we become what we are? If we distance ourselves from what is going on and reflect upon our lives, would it be possible to argue that we can make our life a work of art, reinvent ourselves and become other of what we are already? These are some of the questions we are addressing in this exhibition."
The Annual Conference of the British Sociological Association Social Connections: Identities, Technologies and Relationships at the University of East London is set to be the largest ever Sociology conference to be held in Britain, with over 500 delegates and presenters from all over the world.
