Beam me up, Scotty! Academics reboot at UEL technology conference

Thursday 1 February 2007

The University of East London’s (UEL) School of Computing and Technology held its 2nd Annual Research Conference at the Docklands Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tuesday 22 January.

Over 60 delegates attended the 'Advances in Computing & Technology' conference, which celebrated the research achievements of staff and students within the UEL School.

Posters, papers and presentations covered 30 research projects undertaken in 2006, including investigations into electronic government, neural computing, artificial wrist implants and the use of mobile phones for educational purposes.

Professor Dominic Palmer-Brown, Associate Head of the School of Computing and Technology, said: “Everyone's really enjoyed the conference and it's been a great opportunity for our PhD students to present alongside more experienced colleagues.

"We’ve also had some inspiring talks from guest speakers, who have given us plenty to think about as we formulate exciting ideas for future research projects.”

Speakers included Professor Peter Cochrane, formerly Chief Technology Officer at British Telecom, Professor Stan Oliver of the University of Bolton, and Professor Hongnian Yu from Staffordshire University.

Internationally recognised areas of research within UEL’s School of Computing and Technology include satellite guidance systems, neural computing and geographical information systems.

The School is based at UEL’s Docklands Campus, with dedicated laboratory facilities at the new Knowledge Dock Centre. UEL’s Civil Engineering programmes are rated among the UK’s top twenty, and the School is renowned for innovative research and industrial collaborations.
