The University of East London (UEL) public lecture series is hotting up this Valentine’s Eve, with love, food and politics all on the menu!
On Tuesday 13 Feb, Dr Erika Cudworth of UEL's School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, will give a talk entitled ‘the recipe for love: gender, nature and the politics of food’.
Food advertising, magazines and cookery shows constantly reinforce the idea that animals exist simply for human consumption. The images they use tell a revealing story about how humans treat and relate to animals in the 21st Century and how we treat and relate to each other.
Dr Erika Cudworth is senior lecturer in Politics and Sociology at UEL, and has written several books about our relationships with the natural world. Her latest book The Modern State: Theories and Ideologies (forthcoming 2007, Edinburgh University Press) is co-authored with UEL colleagues Tim Hall and John McGovern.
Dr Cudworth said: “Our portrayal of animals reflects and reinforces not only our exploitation of the creatures we eat, but also the continued manipulation of natural human differences in a social hierarchy.”
The lecture begins at 6.30 at the Business School lecture theatre at UEL’s Docklands campus. All welcome, admission free and chocolate provided! For details call 020 8223 2884 or visit www.uel.ac.uk/lectureseries
