Hundreds of students, employers and skills trainers took part in Employability Works!, an action-packed careers event at the University of East London’s (UEL) Docklands campus on Wednesday 31 January.
The event aimed to prepare students for professional employment after finishing their studies at UEL. Special sessions took place to help students produce a winning CV and brush up on their interview skills.
Adedeji Tewogbade (27), of Barking, is in his final year of a Combined Honours degree in Media and Communication Studies at UEL. Adedeji said: “The day was really useful, especially the CV clinic where my mentors gave me great ideas about how to make successful applications. They also gave me good advice on interview techniques and I’m already feeling more confident.
“I’d definitely recommend it to other students; getting a good job takes a lot of skill and you should never assume that you know everything.”
A whole host of UEL experts were on hand to offer advice and guidance on careers, business, self -employment, work experience, temporary and part-time work, the European Computer Driving Licence, and UEL’s School of Education and Alumni Network.
Femi Bola, Head of UEL’s Employability Unit, said: “Our students are increasingly aware of the key skills and experience they need to develop in order to secure the jobs that they want. Today’s event has been a great opportunity for them to improve their CV and interview skills and gain the confidence that will see them succeed in the future.”
Over 94% of students are in work or further education within six months of completing their degrees, and UEL graduates earn among the highest starting salaries in the UK, according to a recent survey published by the Sunday Times.
