Have you ever wondered what's really going on in your head?
On Wednesday 7 March, the School of Psychology at the University of East London (UEL) is hosting an exciting evening of events in Stratford to explore the mysteries of the human mind, as part of Global Brain Awareness Week.
Dr Ashok Jansari, a leading authority on neuropsychology and principal lecturer at UEL, will give a public lecture entitled Exploring the Human Brain. Dr Jansari will examine what we can learn from studying the brain and how we can apply that to society, help people with brain-damage and improve our own lives.
This will be followed by an interactive exhibition exploring brain science technologies, such as EEG and virtual reality, research on rehabilitation from brain damage, and organisations including Rehab UK, Headway and the Epilepsy Trust, that work with brain-damaged people in the community. Dr Jansari’s patients will talk about their experiences of living with brain damage.
Dr Jansari said: "Our brains are far more complex than even the most sophisticated computers - and much less well understood. We are slowly piecing together the puzzle with new insights from biochemistry, neuroscience and cognitive psychology.
“I also want to demystify the idea of ‘brain-damage’. In recent years, we have seen many films such as Momento, Rain Main and A Beautiful Mind about people with brain disorders and documentaries about the brain and behaviour are becoming more popular on TV. On 7 March, you will have the chance to meet and talk to some of my patients about their experiences.”
UEL's School of Psychology, based at Stratford, is one of the leading centres for psychology education in the UK, rated 23/24 for teaching quality.
Brain Awareness Day is at UEL Stratford campus, Romford Road, E15 4LZ. The exhibition is from 5.30 - 9, with Dr Jansari’s lecture starting at 6.15. Admission is free and all are welcome.
