Guests impressed by exciting opportunities at UEL Open Evening

Friday 12 January 2007

The University of East London (UEL) held a new-look Open Evening on Wednesday 10 January, with over 400 visitors travelling from far and wide to apply for places still available on a wide range of degree programmes starting as early as February.

April Travell (17) from Cumbria, and her mother got up at 5.30am to catch the train down to London for the UEL Open Evening. April said: “It’s definitely been worth it; the Docklands Campus looks great and I’m really impressed by all the IT and library facilities. There’s obviously been a lot of money spent here, and UEL seems like a really up-and-coming university."

Prospective students and local residents enjoyed guided tours of the campuses, talked to staff and students about hundreds of degree programmes and combinations on offer at UEL, and picked up advice and guidance on all aspects of university life.

A dedicated ‘postgraduate lounge’ on each campus wa set up to welcome visitors interested in postgraduate opportunities, including research degrees and a wide range of professionally recognised diplomas, doctorates and taught Masters programmes.

With New Year starts becoming an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional September entry, visitors were also able to apply immediately for a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes starting in February 2007.

Sherifat Martins (20), of Elephant and Castle, applied for a part-time place on UEL’s popular BA (Hons) degree in Early Childhood Studies. Sherifat said: “I love children and I’d like to run my own nursery one day, so I’m sure this is the right course for me. Everyone I’ve spoken to has made me feel really comfortable and confident about coming to UEL – hopefully, I’ll be back to start my degree in just three weeks time!”

UEL’s Stratford Campus is home to the Schools of Education, Health and Bioscience, Law and Psychology. The Stratford Open Evening took place in the Passmore Edwards Building, formerly home to the borough Museum and now refurbished as a stylish Students’ Union facility.

UEL’s Docklands Campus is home to the Schools of Architecture and the Visual Arts, Business, Computing and Technology, and Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies. The Docklands Open Evening took place in the brand-new Business School, which features a vast ‘trading floor’ style computing hall, a 400-seat lecture theatre, an innovative Library and the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Other new developments at UEL include the Children’s Garden Early Years Centre, the Centre for Clinical Education in Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Sports Science, and the Knowledge Dock Centre, home to UEL’s enterprise development and support service. A major new waterfront Student Village, providing accommodation for a further 800 students, will open at the Docklands Campus in April 2007.

Sandra Hollis, Director of Corporate Marketing and International Office at UEL, said: “We have invested over £170 million in our campus facilities over recent years and it's very exciting to see the results. This open evening was a great opportunity for prospective students to find out about the opportunities on offer and experience a dynamic and successful modern university.”

The next UEL Open Day will take place on Wednesday March 7. A range of activities will be available, including a special Brain Awareness Day organised by lecturers from UEL's School of Psychology.
