Walthamstow College of Art alumnus Peter Greenaway awarded CBE

Tuesday 2 January 2007

Acclaimed director Peter Greenaway has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

Peter Greenaway studied at Walthamstow College of Art, a predecessor institution of the University of East London (UEL), between 1962 and 1965. He trained as a mural painter but developed a strong interest in cinema and went on to become one of the most original and adventurous film-makers of recent years.

His experimental and visually spectacular films include The Pillow Book (1996), starring Ewan McGregor, Drowning by Numbers (1988), with Juliet Stephenson and Joely Richardson, and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), which starred Helen Mirren, Michael Gambon and fellow Walthamstow College alumnus Ian Dury.

Peter Greenaway has worked with composer Michael Nyman, who wrote the scores for many of his films. His latest film, entitled Nightwatching and inspired by the life and work of the Dutch painter Rembrandt, is due for release later this year.

UEL’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts, now at Docklands Campus, is rated among leading universities in the UK for research in art and design. For details, visit www.uel.ac.uk/ava
