University Certificates in Nature Conservation - from the comfort of your own habitat!

Monday 22 January 2007

Interested in studying towards a degree in conservation but too busy to bother with lectures?

A unique new distance-learning programme developed by the University of East London (UEL) enables environment conservation practitioners, and anyone with an interest in wildlife and nature, to gain recognised qualifications from the comfort of their own home – or out in the field.

UEL has been running undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in conservation for over 20 years, with graduates going on to a range of careers in conservation management both in the UK and internationally. The university has now launched four new Undergraduate Associate Certificates in Nature Conservation by distance learning which focus on distinct professional areas:

  • Plant identification and survey
  • Animal Biology, identification and survey
  • The Earth: fundamental concepts of geology, geomorphology and soil science
  • Nature Conservation: evaluation and legislation

The Certificates offer academic and practical training to a professional standard. Eachcan be started at any time, completed in 12-weeks part-time by distance learning and is equivalent to a 20-credit undergraduate module. New modules in development include Earth System Science, Field Studies, Landscape Ecology and GIS and Remote Sensing.

There has already been a great response from conservation professionals and interested amateurs alike.

Richard Lindsay, director of conservation programmes at UEL’s School of Health and Bioscience and a world authority on peatland conservation, said: "Individuals who are committed to protecting the natural world tend to lead busy lives, so spending long hours in lecture theatres is not an option. The pioneering teaching methods for these modules mean that you can immerse yourself in our innovative 'learning environment' whenever it suits you, and from almost anywhere in the world.”
