SMARTlab, the new Digital Media Institute at the University of East London (UEL), is set to become Legacy Manager for the Creative Technology suite of NESTA Fellowships and Learning Projects from Monday 4 December 2006.
Nesta is the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, the largest single UK endowment exclusively devoted to supporting talent, innovation and creativity.
SMARTlab will promote the work of a new set of NESTA Fellows and Learning projects and take a proactive approach to raising the profile of these awardees.
The SMARTlab Digital Media Institute aims to bridge the digital divide and connect creative people in all parts of the world, irrespective of age, gender, nationality, wealth, or intellectual and physical ability. It is housed in purpose-built studios within the Knowledge Dock Centre at UEL’s Docklands Campus.
Under the Directorship of Professor Lizbeth Goodman, an internationally recognised leader in the field of interactive media for social inclusion, SMARTlab was founded in 1991 and relocated to UEL earlier this year.
Professor Goodman said: “We welcome the opportunity to showcase this exciting range of cutting-edge work, which will greatly enhance the research, enterprise training and knowledge exchange partnership platforms already on offer at SMARTlab.
“SMARTlab utilises the skills of a wide range of collaborators, from performers to policy makers, media artists to medical doctors, to make a real difference for communities, both locally and globally. Our new purpose-built studios at the University of East London provide an ideal setting for creative exchange, and we look forward to a bright future of promoting socially inclusive technology.”
UEL’s SMARTlab Digital Media Institute offers a range of innovative facilities, including the Multimedia & Games Innovation Centre (MAGIC), the interactive PLAYroom, a variety of incubation and training spaces with linked fabrication, simulation, and product design studios, and a partner institute providing a high definition multi-stream film/video facility.
