Beckton pupils celebrated Black History Month with special art and poetry workshops at the University of East London (UEL) Docklands Campus on 30-31 October.
Over thirty Year 5 pupils from Ellen Wilkinson Primary School took part in the workshops, which focussed on black historical figures and explored themes of self-belief, empowerment and following your dreams.
The children also viewed an exhibition of colourful posters and slides, taken from the archives of Hackney Empire and the Diversity Art Forum and currently on display in UEL’s new Library and Learning Centre.
Michelle Marie, local poet and UEL librarian, led the poetry workshop. Michelle said: “It’s been wonderful to work with these bright young minds; their imagination is really inspiring. From what I’ve seen, these children are definitely university students of the future.”
Michael Mitchell (9), of Beckton, was one of the children involved. Michael said: “It’s been a really good morning; everyone’s getting involved and we’ve been drawing and making poetry. I learnt not to be selfish, and my poem was about my friends.”
