UEL makes dazzling debut at Lord Mayor's Show with ‘Magic of Learning’

Monday 6 November 2006

The University of East London (UEL) makes its debut at the Lord Mayor's Show this Saturday with an exciting entry entitled 'The Magic of Learning', organised in partnership with Investec, a leading international specialist banking group, the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, and local schools.

The Magic of Learning float features a mobile ‘gallery of knowledge’ inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci and pulled by a pioneering eco-friendly bio-ethanol car provided by Ford, pupils from Godwin Junior School in Forest Gate costumed as magicians, a 16-strong Samba band with UEL staff and students, gorgeously dressed dancers with butterfly wings created by Inspiration Arts and MAGIC Digital Media Institute at UEL.

Professor Michael Thorne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London, Colonel Mike Dudding, Deputy Lieutenant for Newham, senior staff from Investec and the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators will march in full regalia representing the progression from school through university to careers in the City and beyond.

The Da Vinci-inspired Gallery of Knowledge also features a secret code carried on each of the eight banners on the float, and whoever solves the mystery will be on course to discover hidden treasure!

Professor Michael Thorne said: “We are delighted to be making our debut at this wonderful event and honoured to have been selected by Investec and the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators as partners in The Magic of Learning. We look forward to having all our friends and families turn out and support us on Saturday morning - and we're working all the meteorological magic we can to encourage the sun to shine!”

The Lord Mayor’s Show takes place this Saturday, 11 November - starting around 10.30. Staff and students from UEL’s Schools of Architecture and the Visual Arts and Computing and Technology are working all week to finish the float at Docklands campus, and members of the Barking Bateria, UEL’s famous samba band, visit Godwin Junior School to run samba and costume workshops.

Ends/.
