All welcome to celebration of People’s London - Saturday 2 December

Thursday 9 November 2006

Prominent Londoners and top academics will lead a special celebration of our capital city and one of its leading historians, Raphael Samuel, at Conway Hall, Holborn, on Saturday 2 December.

The day-long event, organised by the Raphael Samuel History Centre at the University of East London (UEL), will feature lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, live music performances and panel discussions on the history and politics of London.

Academics from across the UK and abroad will speak at the People's London event, alongside prominent Londoners including Deputy Mayor of London Nicky Gavron, writer and environmentalist Ken Worpole, and Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford.

Professor Gareth Stedman Jones, of Cambridge University, will deliver this year’s Raphael Samuel Memorial Lecture. Professor Stedman Jones, one of the UK’s foremost historians, will speak on The Redemptive Powers of Violence? Carlyle, Dickens and Marx on the Legacy of the French Revolution.

Raphael Samuel (1934-1996) was a socialist historian who pioneered the study of popular history and founded the History Workshop movement at Ruskin College, Oxford, where he taught for many years.

At the time of his death, Professor Samuel was teaching at the University of East London, which subsequently renamed its East London History Centre in his honour. The Raphael Samuel History Centre investigates and documents the history of London since the 18th Century, encouraging research in the community as a reflection of Professor Samuel’s passion.

Patrick Keiller, acclaimed director of London (1994) and Robinson in Space (1997), will present City of the Future, a selection of archive films of London. Visitors will also be able to take part in Thames Memoryscape audiowalks, see an Adventures in the Lea Valley photo essay, and view exhibits from the Raphael Samuel Archive display.

Live jazz, rock and traditional music will be performed in the evening, and good value food and drink will be available throughout the day.

People’s London: a celebration of the city of Raphael Samuel will take place at Conway Hall in Red Lion Square, Holborn, from 10am-10pm on Saturday 2 December. The event is free and no booking is required. For further information, contact Barbara Taylor on b.taylor@uel.ac.uk.
