London: City of Disappearances - book launch 31 October

Tuesday 10 October 2006

A major new book exploring London’s shifting landscapes and forgotten voices is set to be launched at the Bishopgate Institute on Tuesday 31 October.

London: City of disappearances is edited by Iain Sinclair and features the work of leading authors, including JG Ballard, Will Self and Marina Warner. Fellow contributors Rachel Lichtenstein, Patrick Wright and Sukhdev Sandhu will join Iain Sinclair in conversation at the launch event, which will also include a general audience discussion.

The event is co-hosted by Penguin Books, the Bishopsgate Institute and the Raphael Samuel History Centre at the University of East London.

Barbara Taylor, Professor of Modern History at UEL and Co-Director of the Raphael Samuel History Centre, said: “This exciting new book reveals an unfamiliar London, a place of hidden spaces and dream-like encounters.”

Iain Sinclair is a leading writer and documentary film-maker, and an expert on the psychogeography of London. His famous 2002 non-fiction book London Orbital described a series of trips he took following the route of the M25 by foot.

The launch of London: City of disappearances will take place on Tuesday 31 October from 6.30 – 8.30pm at the Bishopsgate Institute, near Liverpool Street Station in EC2.

The event is free of charge, with no advanced booking required. For details, contact b.taylor@uel.ac.uk or 020 8223 7148.
